Advancing Safety Science

This month, we’re highlighting UL Research Institutes’ Chemical Insights’ recently published symposium proceedings, expanded coverage of conference engagements, and this year’s Stories of Impact series. Keep reading to find curated resources designed to connect you with the latest advancements in safety science.

Sharing expert insights from WUI fire symposium

A growing body of research shows that when wildfires move through wildland-urban interface (WUI) communities, pollutants from burned materials can persist in the environment and pose ongoing health risks. At this year’s Society of Toxicology (SOT) Annual Meeting and ToxExpo, we hosted a symposium where experts presented real-world case studies and emerging research on the environmental and public health impacts of WUI fire exposures.
We encourage you to explore key takeaways from these discussions in our symposium proceedings, “Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Beyond the Smoke: Exploring the Broader Environmental and Health Impacts,” to see how this evolving science can inform safer, more resilient communities.

Key research highlights from SOT

In addition to our symposium, we had a large presence at the SOT conference and are pleased to share that several of our presentations were featured through SOT’s reporter program. The program’s blogs capture the breadth of work we shared at the meeting, including emerging insights and early findings from ongoing research.

Check out our latest blog for a roundup of reporter posts that highlight our contributions on topics such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and human health, exposure pathways and risk, emerging exposure challenges, and advanced experimental and computational methods for evaluating toxicity.

Stories of Impact

ULRI’s Stories of Impact series showcases how teams across our institutes are advancing safety science to address a range of real-world challenges, from informing and strengthening public health guidance to improving safety through technical innovation. In Chemical Insights’ featured video, Mark Wilson, Ph.D., director of the Center for Analytical & Exposure Science, discusses how novel research is identifying potential health risks associated with dental resin 3D printing and shaping strategies to make these practices in dentistry safer. We invite you to watch the video and explore the full Stories of Impact series to see how ULRI is addressing today’s most pressing safety challenges.
